Charter of São Paulo
Within the framework of so-called
free trade, the working class is at
a stage marked by overexploitation
of the salaried employees,
insecurity, unemployment and
exclusion. With the excuse of
competitivity, companies like
InBev prioritize
profit above everything else, even
to the detriment of people.
The concentration of production in
global oligopolies encourages a
drastic drop in employment and
results in an utmost degradation of
working conditions and workplaces.
While thousands of workers are laid
off, TNCs like
InBev impose a
system of "endless work" on: those
still employed –a war on “time out”
has been declared, multiple tasks
are assigned to a sole person in a
highly stressful environment under
all types of pressure.
Brewery workers from the world, have
held this meeting in Sao Paulo to
discuss these changes, their
impact and to develop common
strategies for the defense of life.
Within the brewery sector there was
simultaneously a large increase of
production and a high concentration
in a handful of transnational
corporations which have absorbed
and, almost extinguished small and
medium sized local businesses.
However, this growth has not
resulted in a better quality of life
for us, the workers, who build this
wealth. Thousands of workers in
several countries have been left
with no employment. In this meeting,
we have received the personal
testimony of our brother Bozo
Perovic, dismissed and persecuted in
his country, Montenegro, because of
his lawful union activities. We
express our full solidarity with
Bozo and consider he is a symbol of
all workers harassed and dismissed
by InBev.
This case is not isolated:, those of
us who still work for
InBev are still in jeopardy of losing the gains and
rights arising from many years of
struggle.
InBev insists in ignoring unions as the legitimate
representatives of workers, who are
not taken into account in the
decision making process.
InBev
must recognize unions and implement
mechanisms for permanent
consultation in good faith, to
guarantee that corporate growth is
not attained on the basis of the
sacrifice and exclusion of its
workers.
Therefore, the union delegates of 13
countries attending this Workshop,
hereby announce the creation of an
Intercontinental Union Committee for
permanent solidarity, exchange of
information, consultation, research
and communication for the defense of
our jobs and rights.
