In a
largely attended Meeting , the workers grouped together in the
National Union of Dominican Frito Lay Workers (according to its
abbreviation in Spanish, SINTRALAYDO) voted their affiliation to
our International trade union.
In a conversation with Sirel, Alexander Mosquea,
general secretary of the Union, he expressed that “the decision
was taken unanimously by the workers present, in a very moving
Meeting“.
Transnational workers have been considering the possibility of
joining the IUF as a way of coordinating actions amongst
the Frito Lay workers in Latin America.
This is a young Union –he continued-, founded three years ago
and that has recognized in the IUF an important ally to
strengthen the organization of transnational companies’ workers
in Dominican Republic”.
Frito Lay Dominicana
is property of PepsiCo and it produces snacks in Santo
Domingo.
It has a history of deep union busting and mistreatment of the
workers who have tried to get organized.
According to Mosquera, the company does not always comply
with the present labour regulations in the country, which has
generated some conflicts in the Union.
At present, we are trying to get the company to sign the
agreement achieved in May, where it commits to respect the basic
commitments stated in the labour regulations of the country –he
expressed-.
On the other hand, Frito Lay has disregarded our Union by
making unilateral decisions in many opportunities. Taking into
consideration the company’s hostility towards the unions, we
have decided to join the IUF.
We consider that, with the support of the International trade
union, and that of our friend and comrade Bernabel Matos,
we will manage to achieve a stronger position to defend our
rights and improve the labour conditions of workers”, concluded
the union leader.
