The general secretary of the Federation of Rural
Laborers of the State of São Paulo (FERAESP)
was shot on the back of his head at point-blank
yesterday, Sunday, August 23, while he slept in a
small farm of his property outside the city of
Araraquara, in the state of São Paulo. According to
members of FERAESP, this was an attempt “to
execute him that, fortunately, failed.”
Elio Neves
is now hospitalized in Araraquara, in an induced
coma. The initial medical report informed that the
bullet was lodged in his neck. While he is in a
critical condition, the doctors assure that his life
is no longer in danger.
This attack occurs amidst a general situation of
rural violence in Brazil, which at times dies
down only to reemerge again, never ceasing to claim
victims among the country’s workers.
We will continue to bring updates on Elio Neves’
health condition and any other developments in
this deplorable attempt on his life.
