On Wednesday 23, the
National Confederation of the Food Industry Workers (CONTAC), held an important
meeting in Brasilia with representatives of the main poultry companies of this
Brazilian industry. The meeting was held at the Ministry of Labour and the
results were commented for Sirel by Siderlei de Oliveira, President of the
Confederation.
-How was the meeting convened?
-It was CONTAC 's
initiative. Some time ago CONTAC proposed the Ministry of Labor to call
companies, the proposal was accepted and executed by the Standards Commission of
such Ministry.
-What's your assessment of the meeting?
-We consider it is a leap towards the solution of the occupational diseases'
problem in the Brazilian poultry industry.
-Why?
-Because the meeting was attended by the main company of the country, Brasil
Foods (BRF),
with 140 thousand workers. Such company was created by the merger of
Perdigao and Sadia-;
the US
company Tyson,
and some other large companies were represented by the poultry sector chamber of
the State of Santa Catarina, location of most poultry companies, and the
Brazilian Association of Poultry Exporters (ABEF,
Portuguese acronym).
-What unions took part?
-There was participation of CONTAC,
its member Federations from the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do
Sul and Minas Gerais.
-What was the result of the meeting?
-The meeting resolved the creation of a Technical Commission within a a 15-day
period in order to discuss standards for the elimination of occupational
diseases provoked by the working system of this sector.
One of the issues discussed was CONTAC 's
proposal to invite the National Confederation of Food and Related Workers (CNTA)
to take part in the Technical Commission, which was accepted. So, we will send
the corresponding invitation to Artur
Bueno de Camargo,
president of CNTA.
-This is a great achievement of workers...
-No doubt about it. I think this has crowned the work of our national and
international campaign for the eradication of occupational diseases in the
poultry industry.
This has been a success of this campaign, where the
IUF has
had a substantial participation internationally.
