Decree banning raw milk sales will not go into effect
In response to
the March 9 mobilization that drew seven thousand demonstrators from across the
dairy chain -including dairy farmers, “milk juggers” (raw milk sellers), and
industrial operators- from 15 departments to the streets of Bogotá, the
Agriculture Ministry undertook to suspend application of decree 3411, which bans
the sale of milk in jugs.
As Salvación
Agropecuaria was one of the organizations that convened the march, our
executive director, Aurelio Suárez Montoya, communicated this important
gain to the demonstrators, hailing it as a resounding victory for civil
resistance and unity. This resistance and unity was not only achieved in Bogotá
with the march, but also in rallies in Manatí, Atlántico, and Rumichaca,
department of Nariño, where ten thousand people protested on the border with
Ecuador.
Peasants and
business operators marched shoulder to shoulder, accompanied by Jorge Enrique
Robledo, Camilo Romero, Germán Navas Talero, Germán
Carlosama, and Joaquín Camelo, the Taitas Lorenzo Muelas y
Jeremías Tunubalá (spiritual leaders of the Misak people), and the governor
of Guambía, Francisco Almendra.
“This is the
fourth mass march staged in Bogotá by raw milk producers, processors, and
sellers,” Robledo said. “This proves once again that through popular
democratic mobilizations we can achieve ours goals.”
