The
organizations member of the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF)
and the Latin American Regional Division of the IUF, gathered here today
at this meeting, agree to pool efforts and resources to strengthen the labor
actions of the two international federations in the Region.
With that aim,
we hereby resolve to promote and contribute to the establishment of National
Coordination Committees among organizations across the entire FISHERY
SECTOR CHAIN.
These
structures shall prioritize the discussion of issues regarding organization,
health, safety and working conditions; the sustainability of resources,
including illegal, undeclared and non-regulated fishing activities; the design
of a diagnosis at the national and regional level on the characteristics,
situations and challenges of the sector. They shall also work to prepare a
common platform of demands and jointly develop union training programs. In
addition, the National Coordination Committees shall undertake to
cooperate to devise public policies for the sector, and carry out actions that
will contribute to the defense of the food sovereignty and safety of their
peoples.
Among the tasks
to be carried out immediately, the most prominent are the struggle to ratify
ILO Convention 188 in each country’s
fishery sector, and the implementation of a campaign to ensure the respect for
Human Rights, including the Freedom of Association of fishery workers in the
Region.
