The meeting
scheduled for today in Madrid between the Agrofood Federations of Spain’s
trade union confederations, Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) and General Workers’
Confederation (UGT), and Manuel Calvo Pumpido, delegate board member of the
Calvo Group was called off. Cecilia Sanz, general secretary of the CCOO
Federation, informed the IUF’s Latin American regional office this morning
of the cancellation, and Sirel spoke with her for a full report
The general secretary of the CCOO’s Federation of Agrofood workers
explained that both federations had requested a meeting with the CALVO
Group, suggesting today as a possible date. The company had replied that
Manuel Calvo Pumpido, the delegate board member, was traveling at
that moment, but did not say that the meeting would not be held on this
date. “We have not heard from them yet, and it is likely that the company’s
representative has not returned. We have agreed with the UGT
Federation to try to contact Calvo again tomorrow to set a new date
for the meeting.”
As for the purpose of the meeting, Cecilia Sanz said that “We want to
present to the company the same demands that SGTIPAC and the IUF
are making, that is, that union rights are being violated in Calvo’s
El Salvador plant and that the company must reinstate the unionists
that were dismissed and maintain the same labor relations it has in all the
other plants of the Group, putting an end to current antiunion practices and
opening a space up to negotiate with the union, in accordance with to the
ILO’s international conventions. In short, we want to support the
efforts that are being made by the Union in El Salvador and by the
IUF in this case.”
The Agrofood Federations of the CCOO and the UGT will do
everything possible to have this meeting before August, when summer
vacations begins in Europe.
The IUF’s regional office therefore remains in state of alert, and
will inform immediately when a new date has been set.
