The National Board of
SICO, hereby informs the
Colombian Union Movement, particularly the
United Workers Federation of Colombia (CUT)
and the International Union of Food,
Agricultural, Hotel, Restaurant, Catering,
Tobacco and Allied Workers Unions (IUF) -of
which SICO is a
member- that the company Bebidas y Alimentos de
Urabá - Badur (Coca
Cola Carepa) has initiated a
surreptitious union disaffiliation campaign.
After signing the new Collective
Bargaining Agreement on 16 February, Management,
through its officers
Martha Elena Carmona,
Production Manager, and
Raúl Antonio Cogollo,
Maintenance Management, has been offering
promotions and applying a discrimination policy
in overtime schedules for Sundays and holidays
with privileges for non union workers.
Clearly, this campaign is aimed
at destroying the Union and thus eliminating the
Collective Agreement, which provisions ensure
job security and basic rights of workers without
any discrimination whatsoever.
Despite the Collective Agreement
between
Badur
and
SICO
was negotiated through a dialogue process
without conflict, it is clear that the Badur's
background in terms of confrontation and union
busting were investigated by the National State
Attorney's Office as a result accusations of
another union five years before
SICO
re-organized the union and resumed collective
bargaining.
During such negative period of
union absence and accusations for the killing of
unionists, workers did not obtain salary
increases and were usually subject to management
arbitrary actions.
In consideration of the above, in
the name of all local union boards we state our
unconditional support to the
SICO-Carepa
local union and call on the National Executive
Committee of
CUT,
the Antioquia Regional Board of
CUT
and the
IUF
Latin American Regional Secretariat to
immediately join us in order to prevent the
destruction of the local union of
SICO-Carepa
and its Collective Agreement.
We must remind that such
Collective Agreement was considered emblematic
by a recent ILO
mission because of the rights obtained in terms
of union freedom, freedom of association and
collective bargaining.
Finally, we call on all
SICO
members in Carepa to be united and avoid being
influenced or deceived by management. According
to our experience, in the event
Badur - Coca Cola
manages to destroy the union and the collective
agreement, outsourcing and dismissals will
pervade, and union, economic, and social rights
will be absolutely lost.
National Board,
JULIO RUBEN PADILLA A.
