The Calvo Group has now secured
full control of Gomes da Costa

The Spanish group
Calvo
has just gained full control of the Brazilian company Gomes da Costa –a
tuna and sardine processor– by purchasing the 20 percent that was still owned by
the company’s old shareholders.

In October 2004,
Calvo
had acquired an 80 percent interest in Gomes da Costa at a cost of 50
million dollars. Since then, it has invested nearly 100 million dollars in the
business, with 50 percent of its investment going into a packing plant in
Itajaí (Santa Catarina).

Last year Gomes da Costa’s sales totaled 310 million reais (174 million
dollars) and its goal for 2008 was to bring that figure up to 350 million reais.
Calvo’s
annual sales worldwide total 380 million euros, more than 557 million dollars.
