The
international coordinator of the World Rainforest Movement (WRM), Ricardo
Carrere, and the general secretary of the IUF, Ron Oswald, signed an
important collaboration and complementation agreement today in Geneva, in
the framework of the 25th Congress of the IUF.
Carrere
commented on its significance:
“We’ve
signed a collaboration agreement between the two organizations, which has a
precedent in an agreement signed with the IUF’s Latin American
Regional Office that has been very successful. Among other issues, we have
collaborated extensively in the struggle against oil palm plantations there.
This has encouraged us to expand and broaden that agreement with the IUF
on a global level.
Our
objectives will be to continue to collaborate with and complement each
other, as we often participate together in seminar panels and other
activities with similar points of view. The WRM’s struggle is
centered on the defense of tropical rainforest and their peoples, and
against plantations, and the IUF focuses its attention on the workers
of both the rainforests and the plantations. Therefore, although we look at
things from different angles we often converge in our approaches to the same
issues, and that is why we want to collaborate with each other, setting
targets and goals that will enable us to carry out joint activities when we
have the chance to express that complementarity.
By signing
this agreement today, we are formalizing an agreement which, in fact, we
have already been carrying out for many years in Latin America and which we
now extend to the entire IUF structure.”
