Cocerns: Labour dispute at Cervecería Hondureña
Dear Mr. Nel
The IUF is the global trade union federation
representing over 11 million workers throughout the food
chain, including in the beverage sector. We regroup 373
affiliated unions in 122 countries among wich are many
organizations representing SABMiller workers. The Union
of Beverage and Related Industry Workers of Honduras (STIBYS)
- representing the workforce at our subsidiary
Cervecería Hondureña S.A.- is one of them.
STIBYS has informed us of the overall situation that
forced the union to opt for industrial action at
Cervecería Hondureña starting on January 11, 2008. These
include –among others- local management violations of
the 2003 colective labour agreement, interference in
union affairs and a clear lack of willingness to
negotiate a new collective agreement with the union, as
witnessed by the failure of all local dialogue,
mediation and conciliation initiatives over the past 17
months.
Lastly, during the hole day of December 28, Cervecería
Hondureña’s management refused to receive the union
delegation that came to file the strike notice with the
company in compliance with local legislation and
eventually let the union representatives in only after
the authorities were involved by the local inspectorate
of labour. We are shocked that a leading global brewer
as SABMiller allows its Honduras management to employ
such practices in order to deny fundamental human rights
such as freedom of association and collective
bargaining.
We urge you to use your good offices and swiftly
intervene with you Cervecería Hondureña S.A. management
requesting that they enter into meaningful, good faith
negotiations with STIBYS for the renewal of the
collective labour agreement with no further delays and
concretely address the longstanding union log of claims.
We are informing our worldwide membership of
STIBYS-reprsented workers’ just demands and of local
SABMiller management’s reaction to them. We monitor this
conflict very closely and will act accordingly.
Awaiting your response, I am
Yours sincerely,
Ron Oswald
